A Pair of George III Demi Lune Mahogany Card Tables – SOLD
The 18th Century was obsessed with gaming, which resulted in many evolving designs of card tables.
George III , unlike George II,who loved and encouraged gambling, tried to discourage it , but completely failed. Fortunes continued to be made and lost in an evening.
This pair, typical of the late 18th Century, is a fine example of restrained elegance and lovely colour and patination. They are covered in green baize, and when open are supported by two legs that swing out.
They can of course continue to be used for playing Bridge , for example, while when closed they provide a classic symmetry to any room.’
