Hepplewhite is known for furniture in the French manner, with its elegant flowing lines, in about the 1770’s , in contrast to the more prevalent neo-classical designs of Robert Adam and others .
This French Hepplewhite serpentine card table
is a fine example, standing on generous moulded cabriole legs ending in scroll feet on plinths . Cabriole is a French dancing term incidently for a bound or a leap and this table has attractive movement in its design, the moulded serpentine apron or front balancing the curve of the legs . A further sign of quality of workmanship is shown by the detailed carving of lovely foliage at the top of the two front legs .
Made of heavy mahogany, this table is in good structural condition and has a fine mellow colour and patination .
It is a great edition to any room even if you do not play cards .
